Three names dominate "best password manager" searches in the US: NordPass, Bitwarden and 1Password. They all beat sticky notes and reused passwords. They are not interchangeable on price, free tiers or security design details.

This comparison sticks to official plan pages and vendor docs checked October 30, 2026. We do not invent audit scores or speed tests. For the broader "are managers safe?" question, read Is a Password Manager Safe? NordPass vs Browser Passwords.

NordPass: simple vault, free on-ramp, Nord ecosystem

What it is: A consumer password manager from Nord Security (same company family as NordVPN). NordPass documents zero-knowledge vault encryption (including XChaCha20 on its security page) and cites third-party audits such as Cure53 plus certifications like ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2.

Free vs Premium (nordpass.com/plans, October 30, 2026): Free includes autosave, autofill and secure storage. Premium adds smoother multi-device use, Password Health, Data Breach Scanner, file attachments and sharing-oriented extras. Family covers up to six separate vaults. Authenticator availability can differ from older marketing—confirm on the live plan table.

Pricing note: Nord displays region- and promo-dependent figures. Same policy as our other NordPass articles: we are not publishing a single US dollar sticker here. Check nordpass.com/plans or the checkout after the link below.

Pros

  • Easy app experience for non-technical users
  • Real free tier to start
  • 30-day money-back on Premium
  • Nice if you already pay for NordVPN

Bitwarden: best free plan and open-source default

What it is: An open-source password manager with apps for every major platform. You can use Bitwarden's cloud or self-host.

Pricing (bitwarden.com/pricing, October 30, 2026): Free personal plan with unlimited passwords and devices. Premium $1.65/month billed annually ($19.80/year) adds vault health-style reports, built-in TOTP authenticator, file attachments, emergency access and related Premium extras. Families is $3.99/month billed annually for up to six users with Premium features (per Bitwarden's January 2026 plan announcement and pricing page).

Pros

  • Most generous mainstream free tier
  • Open source + optional self-host
  • Very low Premium price if you want TOTP + health reports

Cons

  • UI is functional, not as polished as 1Password for everyone
  • Advanced enterprise features live on Teams/Enterprise seats

Pick it if: You want free forever across phone and laptop, or you care about open source.

1Password: polish, Secret Key, no permanent free plan

What it is: A long-standing paid manager. Accounts combine your account password with a Secret Key stored on your devices (two-secret key derivation), so a stolen vault blob is harder to attack with the password alone. Travel Mode can hide vaults when crossing borders. Watchtower flags weak, reused and breached logins.

Pricing (1password.com personal pricing, October 30, 2026): Individual $3.99/month with annual billing; promotional $2.99/month for the first year for eligible new customers buying on 1Password.com. Families $5.99/month annual (promo $4.49). 14-day free trial. No lasting free tier. Storage listed at 1 GB per user on personal plans.

Pros

  • Excellent apps and sharing UX
  • Secret Key design and Travel Mode
  • Strong family admin tools

Cons

  • Costs more than Bitwarden Premium
  • No permanent free plan
  • Not open source

Pick it if: You will pay for polish and family sharing, and you like the Emergency Kit / Secret Key model.

Bottom line

  • Bitwarden wins free and open-source.
  • 1Password wins paid polish and Secret Key / Travel Mode.
  • NordPass wins if you want an easy Nord-ecosystem vault with a free start and Premium health/breach tools—check current pricing at checkout.

Whichever you choose beats password reuse. Add passkeys and authenticator-app 2FA on accounts that matter.

Frequently asked questions

Is NordPass, Bitwarden or 1Password best overall?

+

Bitwarden is the best free and open-source pick. 1Password is the polished paid experience with a Secret Key plus master password. NordPass is a strong choice if you want a simple app, a lasting free tier, Premium extras like Password Health and Data Breach Scanner, or you already use NordVPN.

Which password manager is free?

+

Bitwarden Free includes unlimited passwords and devices. NordPass Free includes unlimited storage with autosave/autofill; multi-device convenience and health/breach tools sit on Premium. 1Password has a 14-day trial, not a permanent free plan.

How much do they cost?

+

Bitwarden Premium is $1.65/month billed annually at $19.80 (official pricing, checked October 30, 2026); Families is $3.99/month billed annually per Bitwarden's January 2026 plan update. 1Password Individual is $3.99/month annually (promotional $2.99 first year for eligible new customers on 1password.com). Are password managers safe?

+

Reputable managers that encrypt vault data on your device (zero-knowledge) are safer than reusing passwords. Protect the vault with a strong master password, enable MFA, and prefer passkeys on important accounts. See our NordPass safety guide for a deeper walkthrough.

Do these managers support passkeys?

+

Bitwarden, 1Password and NordPass all market passkey storage/use in their consumer apps. Passkeys still depend on the website offering them—start with Google, Apple and your bank. Pair this page with our passkeys vs passwords guide.
