Password Strength Checker
By Jaden Vo · Free · Private (browser-only)
Paste a password candidate and get a plain-English strength read: length, character variety, and flags for common weak patterns. Use it before you save a new login — then store a unique password in a manager, or switch the site to a passkey when available.
Runs only in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
Strength: —
- Type a password to check it.
How to read the result
- Length is the biggest lever. Twelve characters with mixed types beat a short “complex” password.
- Common passwords (like
password1) fail even if they look mixed. - Bits estimate is a rough teaching number from character-pool math — not a lab audit or guarantee against breaches.
Next steps that actually help
- Generate a long unique password in a manager such as NordPass (affiliate link).
- Turn on passkeys for Google, Apple, and banks where offered — see how passkeys work.
- Prefer an authenticator app over SMS codes — SMS 2FA vs authenticator.
- On cafe Wi-Fi, HTTPS still matters; a VPN is optional for routine browsing — Do you need a VPN on public Wi-Fi?

FAQ
Is my password sent to a server?
No. The check runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. We do not upload, log or store what you type.
What makes a password strong?
Length matters most. Aim for 12+ characters (16+ is better), mix character types, avoid common words and reuse. A password manager can generate unique ones per site.
Should I use a password manager?
Yes for most people. Managers store unique passwords behind one master secret (or biometrics). See our NordPass vs browser passwords guide.
Are passkeys better than passwords?
For sites that support them, passkeys resist phishing better than typed passwords. Start with email and banking accounts.
