Google AI Edge Gallery
What if your phone could run a ChatGPT-style assistant with no internet and no data leaving the device? This free app from Google does exactly that.

What it does
AI Edge Gallery is a free, open-source app from Google that downloads open AI models (like the Gemma family) onto your phone or Mac and runs them locally. Once a model is downloaded, your prompts, photos and recordings are processed on the device itself, so it keeps working in airplane mode and nothing is sent to a cloud server.
5 key features
- Offline AI chat: Multi-turn conversations with a local model, plus an optional Thinking Mode that shows the step-by-step reasoning (on supported models such as Gemma 4).
- Ask Image: Point the camera or pick a photo and ask questions about it: identify objects, describe a scene, or work through a visual puzzle.
- Audio Scribe: Turn voice recordings into text and translate them, all on the device.
- Search your photos and videos in plain English: Instant Media Search and Video Moment Finder let you type what you are looking for and jump to the matching photo or video moment.
- Try and compare models: Download models from a list or load your own, test prompts in Prompt Lab, and benchmark how fast each one runs on your hardware.
Who it is for
- Privacy-minded people who want AI without sending data to the cloud
- Travellers and anyone with patchy internet
- Curious users who want to see what phones can do with AI today
- Developers testing on-device models
How to try it
Android 12+ and iOS 17+; a macOS download is also offered. Models download once, then run offline.
